An Evolutionary Mismatch

From the RFC Monthly Newsletter!

“Evolutionary mismatch occurs when an organism's traits, which were once advantageous, become detrimental... the environment has evolved faster than the organism can adapt through natural selection, creating a disconnect between the organism's biology and its current surroundings.”

I struggled for years to maintain a healthy body weight and to control my overeating and binge eating. I must have tried at least four diets a year. I could lose a little weight, maintain it for a few weeks, but then I’d slip back into my old eating patterns and end up right where I started: frustrated and feeling awful about myself. Another failure to add to the list.

And yet, at the same time, I had so many things to celebrate. I started a graphic design business, had a great marriage, an incredible circle of friends, and a supportive family. I was a hard worker—caring, kind, and dependable.

So why couldn’t I figure out this ONE THING???

It’s the same question I hear from so many people I’ve met through Real Forking Change. We are some of the smartest, kindest, most accomplished people! We’ve achieved a lot in our careers and personal lives. So what gives?

Here’s the deal: it’s not a personal failure. It’s a function of our brains—hardwired to help us survive in a world of scarcity—trying to navigate a world of overabundance. Our modern food environment and culture hijack those survival instincts and send them into overdrive.

Bingeing is a survival mechanism.

The problem isn’t willpower. It’s biology.

Our brains haven’t evolved fast enough to meet the demands of this new world. It’s what researchers call an “evolutionary mismatch.”

What finally helped me break free from the dieting cycle was realizing that certain foods just don’t work for me. I don’t have an “off” switch for them. When I removed those foods from my life, something amazing happened: I felt peaceful. I lost 25 pounds—and I’ve kept it off. This is my fifth summer wearing the same size clothes!

If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. So many of us—high-achieving, big-hearted people—have struggled for years, tried every diet under the sun, and never found a long-term solution. While a few people can moderate all foods, many of us simply can’t. My brain is never satisfied with just one cookie—it won’t stop asking for more until I’ve eaten the whole box.

Working with me is a journey of discovery. Together, we figure out which foods you can moderate, and which ones trigger relentless cravings. From there, we build a sustainable way of eating that supports your multi-dimensional health, your peace of mind, and your right-sized body.

And the best part? You stay there.

Only one clothing size in your closet. Imagine that.
